At the Institute, we deal with animal welfare in connection with the production of food, especially in connection with the slaughter of farm animals and the killing of wild animals.

Project On-farm slaughtering in dialogue - Studies on on-farm slaughtering with regard to animal welfare and consumer protection with knowledge transfer for practice

Project description

On-farm slaughtering offers the possibility of slaughtering a certain number of cattle, pigs and horses on the farm of origin through mobile or partially mobile slaughter units. From an animal welfare perspective, this can reduce or avoid transport and slaughter-related stress. However, on-farm slaughtering requires strict conditions to ensure the high level of animal welfare and food safety.

The aim of the project is to scientifically monitor on-farm and mobile slaughtering with regard to animal welfare and food safety. Finally, training materials on mobile slaughtering for different stakeholders in the value chain will be developed and best practice examples will be presented.

Project Investigations into the proportion of pregnancies in slaughtered animals and the reasons for the surrender of pregnant animals for slaughter, taking into account the different types of animals and uses.

Project description

The aim of the planned research project is a close-meshed collection of representative data on the frequency and slaughter of pregnant farm animals in Germany as well as the evaluation of reasons leading to the establishment of this practice. In addition to the parameters to be routinely recorded, the stage or developmental status of the foetuses should be recorded in particular in the case of detected pregnancies. In the case of such findings, the farm of origin and the possible reasons for the surrender of pregnant animals should be determined. In particular, it should be ascertained whether the farmers who handed over pregnant animals for slaughter were aware of the pregnancy or whether the pregnancy was irrelevant to the decision to slaughter the animals. If the farmer was aware of the pregnancy of animals for slaughter, the reason or motivation for slaughter should be investigated.
