Highly specialised

The "Klinik für Vögel und Reptilien" (Clinic for Birds and Reptiles) is one of five highly specialised university clinics in Germany. We are the only clinic to offer a certified European advanced training programme in the field of avian and reptile medicine. Numerous collaborations with experts from Germany and abroad enable us to provide expert care and treatment for our often exotic patients.

Specialist staff for our patients

Our clinic is staffed by European and nationally certified veterinary specialists in birds and reptiles. Patients include pet birds, birds of prey, pigeons, pedigree poultry, diseased wild birds as well as lizards, snakes and turtles. They are examined and treated by us for purchase examinations, husbandry advice or in case of illness. In the clinic we care for about 80 animals at the same time. Outpatient and inpatient care is provided by our expert team on the basis of the latest scientific findings and modern medical technology.

Cooperation with other institutions

Depending on the patient's need, we cooperate with various established institutions within and outside our faculty to enable rapid, safe and targeted diagnostics. Our comprehensive range of diagnostic services includes imaging procedures, laboratory diagnostics and post-mortem diagnostics.

Research projects

We are involved in various research projects, for example on animal-friendly husbandry or the approval of medicines for ornamental birds and productive poultry. In the field of reptiles, we are currently conducting research on husbandry problems as well as on infection diagnostics with various focal points, including ferlaviruses, salmonellae and fungi. We work closely with other institutes of the faculty as well as other universities.
