Abstract

Professorin Dr. med. vet. Ingrid Vervuert

Diplomate in Animal Nutrition and Dietetics

Temporary head of the Institute of Animal Nutrition, Nutrition Diseases and Dietetics

I did my doctoral degree in Animal Nutrition. I am a diplomate in Animal Nutrition and Dietetics. Currently, I am in charge of the entire spectrum of teaching and research in our institute. In addition I am the head of the nutritional consultation service for veterinarians and animal holders. I have a special degree in didactics which is embedded in the “Zertifikationsprogramm” of Leipzig University. My research area is focused on obesity in equines and other animals. Furthermore, I am involved in research to prevent gastric ulcers in animals with special interests in the equine. In addition, a current project focus on the impact of pyrrolizidine alkaloids in compound feeds for horses.

In June 2019 I have been appointed as a professor.

  • 10/1989 - 05/1995

My research is focused on ´civilisation diseases´ in livestocks with a key focus on the equine. Main research topics include obesity, gastric ulcers and feed intake behaviour.

Due to my successful fundraising, my research group is currently working on molecular changes in adipose and liver tissue during the course of excessive energy intake or during inflammation in horses and ponies.

Another topic of my research focuses on the impact of feed on the gastric mucosa and on dental abbreviations in the equine and calves. We aim to develop nutritional strategies for preventing gastric ulcers. Currently, my research group is also integrated in the excellence cluster nutriCARD. In cooperation with the research focus ´Civilisation diseases, Infection, Consumer protection, Nutrition and Animal welfare (= ZIVET)´ nutriCARD aims to produce safe foods with respect to cardiovascular health in humans.

According to the reduced availability of forages in horses due to climatic changes we investigate the mechanism of selection of poisoning plants in hay in a current project.
