Abstract

Uwe Müller is a biologist and work since 2001 at the University of Leipzig at the faculty of veterinary medicine under supervision of Prof. Gottfried Alber in the field of infectious immunology. He is interested in the interaction of Cryptococcus neoformans, a humanpathogenic fungus, with the immune system of the lung. Before his recent interest in the role of alveolar epithelial cells in pulmonary cryptococcosis, he had a grant of the DFG, focussing on the Th2 response in cryptococcal infection. Besides his scientific interests he is a lecturer for immunology, laboratory animal science, and genetics.

His methodological portfolio includes RT PCR, western blotting and for analyses of cells flow cytometric approaches and ELISA techniques. To measure barrier functions of cells he uses electrical procedure.

In his diploma and doctoral theses Uwe Müller focussed on the infectious immunological question of interactions of the intracellular parasite Trypanosoma cruzi with the host immune system at the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology. Subsequent he switched his field of interest from parasites to fungal pathogens, therefore he moved to the Institute of Immunology in the Veterinarian Faculty of the University of Leipzig. Under the supervision of Prof. Alber he examined the role of allergy-related cytokines and cytokine receptors in pulmonary cryptococcosis. Concomitant with this work he raised funds from the DFG to answer question to characterize cells involved in immunopathology in pulmonary cryptoccococsis. In a recent project he focussed on the role of lung epithelial cells in cryptococcosis, especially barrier function and modulation of the immune response. For this work he established in vitro models.

Immunology, laboratory animal science, and genetics are the main topics of Uwe Müller's lectures. Since 2001 Uwe Müller participates in the lectures, required electives, and trainings in immunology and laboratory animal science. In 2014 he resumed the genetics lectures. Together with Prof. Alber and Dr. Eschke Uwe Müller is responsible for the teachings of the Institute of Immunology at the Veterinary faculty.

  • Zoology (part: evolution, immunology)

    Aspects and forces of evolution will be presented in this lecture in 3 lessons. In 5 lessions immunological aspects, i.a. innate immunity and immune evasion mechanisms will be in focus.

  • Animal breeding and Genetics

    In this lecture different aspects of genetic will be in focus, (i) classic and molecular genetics, (ii) population genetics and evolution, and (iii) pathogenetics. In total the lecture comprises 42 lessons in the 2nd and 3rd term.

  • Laboratory animals

    Experts in their field present different species of laboratory animals and applications in which they are used. Beside animal models also aspects of ethics and alternative methods will be demonstrated.

  • Use of digital tools

    Moodle, Zoom and other digital formats offer a lot of potential to intensify teaching and to provide students with opportunities to repeat teaching content (e.g. via digital online presentations and films), to evaluate learning success (e.g. via online exercises and tests) and also to intensify contact between the teacher and the learner. A variety of tools are used to improve teaching and take it to a new level.
