Our teaching and research farm serves as a training facility for students of veterinary medicine and other faculties at Leipzig University. We keep a variety of farm animals for this purpose, including some endangered breeds. The LFG's plant production serves to provide animal feed and to process and dispose of waste products from the faculty's animal husbandry.

TRAINING COMPANY

Our teaching and research farm is part of the joint training program for training companies in the Leipzig area. At the training companies, trainees acquire theoretical knowledge of animal husbandry and agriculture. However, the training companies cannot always cover all animal species. With our diverse range of animals, we offer companies and their trainees the opportunity to conduct practical exercises in animal breeding, animal hygiene, and feeding.

ANIMAL PRODUCTION

Our tasks in animal production:

  • Cattle farming with a focus on milk production
  • Pig breeding and fattening
  • Sheep breeding and fattening
  • Fallow deer husbandry
  • Keeping of endangered farm animals: German Saddleback Pig , Merino Meat Sheep, Coburger Fuchs Sheep
  • Laboratory animal husbandry

PLANT PRODUCTION

At the teaching and research farm, we produce our own roughage, practice pasture farming, and grow grain, sugar beet, and rapeseed. Three percent of our cultivated land is hedges and flowering areas for soil and water conservation. With a varied crop rotation and the use of high-quality seeds, we achieve excellent yields and limit the use of pesticides. We comply with the requirements of the new Fertilizer Directive and also ensure insect, soil, and water protection with hedges and flowering strips.

Growing in our fields:

  • Grains (barley, wheat and rye)
  • rapeseed
  • field grass
  • corn
  • sugar beets
